Perceived control, influence, responsibility, and helplessness in situations of choiceless control.

The purpose of the present study was to examine the feasibility of choiceless control in determining perceptions of control, influence, responsibility, and helplessness over outcomes. After reviewing and critiquing some traditional theories and research that exist in the control literature, a new conceptualization of control is presented. Based on research by Nickels et al. (2005), an extended research design was proposed and tested, which examined the separate effects of actual control, choice, and predictability. The present findings show significantly higher ratings of perceived influence under conditions in which individuals made their own choice (whether voluntary or involuntary) between options that made a difference (actual control) in a failed outcome that was predicted. Whereas perceived control ratings were significantly higher with actual control, feelings of responsibility over the outcome were significantly higher when actual control was combined with a voluntary choice. Although feelings of helplessness were not significantly affected, ratings of frustration over the outcome were significantly higher when actual control was combined with the prediction that a failed outcome would occur. The theoretical relevance of these findings is discussed, and the generalizability of the new conceptualization of control is explored in terms of its relation to positive psychology (e.g., humour) and cross-cultural research frameworks.Dept. of Psychology. Cover slip external cavity diode laser

The design of a 671 nm diode laser with a mode-hop-free tuning range of 40 GHz is described. This long tuning range is achieved by simultaneously ramping the external cavity length with the laser injection current. The external cavity consists of a microscope cover slip mounted on piezoelectric actuators. In such a configuration the laser output pointing remains fixed, independent of its frequency. Using a diode with an output power of 5-7 mW, the laser linewidth was found to be smaller than 30 MHz. This cover slip cavity and feedforward laser current control system is simple, economical, robust, and easy to use for spectroscopy, as we demonstrate with lithium vapor and lithium atom beam experiments.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Review of Scientific Instruments 7/29/0

Does physical activity moderate the association between alcohol drinking and all-cause, cancer and cardiovascular diseases mortality risk? A pooled analysis of eight British population cohorts

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether physical activity (PA) moderates the association between alcohol intake and all-cause mortality, cancer mortality and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) mortality. DESIGN: Prospective study using 8 British population-based surveys, each linked to cause-specific mortality: Health Survey for England (1994, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2004 and 2006) and Scottish Health Survey (1998 and 2003). PARTICIPANTS: 36 370 men and women aged 40 years and over were included with a corresponding 5735 deaths and a mean of 353 049 person-years of follow-up. EXPOSURES: 6 sex-specific categories of alcohol intake (UK units/week) were defined: (1) never drunk; (2) ex-drinkers; (3) occasional drinkers; (4) within guidelines (35 (women) >49 (men)). PA was categorised as inactive (≤7 MET-hour/week), active at the lower (>7.5 MET-hour/week) and upper (>15 MET-hour/week) of recommended levels. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: Cox proportional-hazard models were used to examine associations between alcohol consumption and all-cause, cancer and CVD mortality risk after adjusting for several confounders. Stratified analyses were performed to evaluate mortality risks within each PA stratum. RESULTS: We found a direct association between alcohol consumption and cancer mortality risk starting from drinking within guidelines (HR (95% CI) hazardous drinking: 1.40 (1.11 to 1.78)). Stratified analyses showed that the association between alcohol intake and mortality risk was attenuated (all-cause) or nearly nullified (cancer) among individuals who met the PA recommendations (HR (95% CI)). CONCLUSIONS: Meeting the current PA public health recommendations offsets some of the cancer and all-cause mortality risk associated with alcohol drinking

Psychological adjustment in later life: Environmental choice, motivational style and locus of control as contributing factors.

According to self-determination theory, high environmental choice leads to self-determined forms of motivation which, in turn, lead to psychological adjustment. However, O\u27Connor and Vallerand (1994b) found that degree of environmental choice and motivational style must be congruent for the optimal psychological adjustment of older adults living in nursing homes. Research also indicates that the psychological adjustment of elderly persons depends on the congruence between environmental choice and health locus of control orientation. The present study sought to gain a better understanding of the relationship between environmental choice, motivational style, and health locus of control orientation in predicting the psychological adjustment of non-institutionalized older adults. Male and female participants over the age of 65 and living in non-institutionalized settings completed measures of environmental choice, motivational style, health locus of control orientation, health, and psychological adjustment. As predicted, environmental choice, motivational style, and health locus of control orientation each made a unique contribution to the prediction of psychological adjustment. However, congruence between environmental choice and personal characteristics did not predict psychological adjustment. Instead, environmental choice, internal health locus of control, and powerful others external health locus of control each contributed independently to psychological adjustment. Motivational style was equivocally related to psychological adjustment. Implications of these results for self-determination theory and person-environment fit models of psychological adjustment are discussed.Dept. of Psychology.
